You go to Audience Manager, find an old remarketing list with zero members, try to delete it — and Google says no. The list is "still in use." You have to go into every campaign and ad group that uses it, remove it manually from each one, and then come back to delete it. If the audience is attached to 10 campaigns, that's 10 separate operations in the UI.
This is one of those Google Ads housekeeping tasks that everyone puts off. Here's how it works, why it matters, and how to clean it up fast with Claude.
Why Google won't let you delete it
Google Ads treats any audience attached to an active or paused campaign or ad group as "in use" — even if the audience has zero members and hasn't served an impression in years. The only way to delete the audience is to first detach it from every campaign and ad group that references it.
For a well-used audience this can be a lot of places. In a typical account we've seen a single old Black Friday remarketing list attached to 40+ ad groups across multiple campaigns — because it was added years ago as an observation audience account-wide and never cleaned up.
Manually removing it means: open each campaign → Audiences tab → find the list → remove it. Repeat 40 times. Then come back and delete the audience. Most people just leave the old lists sitting there.
Why it's worth cleaning up
Zero-member audiences sitting in campaigns aren't actively hurting performance — Google ignores them for serving. But they do cause real problems:
- Account clutter — old audiences make it harder to find the ones you're actually using
- Smart Bidding noise — technically empty audience signals can confuse reporting
- Google's own cleanup policy — audiences unused for 540 days get automatically closed anyway, so you might as well delete them on your terms
- Audit confusion — when reviewing a campaign's audience targeting, dead lists mixed in with active ones make it hard to understand what's actually targeting
How to do it with Claude and ADS MCP
With ADS MCP connected to Claude, the entire cleanup takes a few minutes regardless of how many campaigns the audience is attached to.
Step 1 — List all audiences and find the empty ones:
"List all my audiences in account 123-123-1234 and show which ones have zero members but are still in use."
Claude returns a table showing every audience, its size, and exactly which campaigns and ad groups it's attached to. You can immediately see the old seasonal lists — Black Friday 2019, Black Week 2020, old promotional audiences from past campaigns — all with zero members, all still referenced somewhere in the account.
Step 2 — Detach from all campaigns in one go:
"Detach the Black Friday 2019 audience from all campaigns and ad groups."
Claude finds every campaign criterion and ad group criterion using that audience and removes them all in one API call. What would take 20–40 manual UI clicks takes about 3 seconds. Claude reports back exactly what was detached — which campaigns, which ad groups.
Step 3 — Delete the audience:
"Now delete it."
Done. Historical performance data is retained in Google Ads reports — you don't lose any history, you just lose the clutter.
You can then repeat for the next audience, or ask Claude to handle several at once.
What to keep, what to delete
Not every zero-member audience should be deleted. A few worth keeping:
- Recently created Customer Match lists — if you just connected Shopify Customer Match, the audience will show zero members while it's populating. Give it 24–72 hours before assuming it's empty.
- Seasonal audiences you'll reuse — if you run the same Black Friday promotion every year and reuse the same audience list, keep it. Just make sure it's set to "Open" before the season so it starts collecting members again.
- Observation audiences on key campaigns — even a zero-member list used for observation doesn't hurt anything, but do check if it makes sense to keep it around.
Old seasonal lists from 3–5 years ago with zero members and no plan to reuse them are the safest to delete. Google even does this automatically — audiences unused for 540 days are set to "Closed" status automatically.
